A traditional Jiggs dinner comes from the outposts of Newfoundland. It is a traditional Irish boiled dinner made of Corned Beef and Cabbage. Many people think it got its name from the old cartoon strip “Bringing up Father” in the early 1900s. Jiggs was an Irish immigrant who would regularly eat corned beef and cabbage.
Jiggs dinner has been traditionally the Sunday staple for many families on the east coast. The left overs would be mixed together as “Hash” and served with Bologna on Mondays.
It still remains to be a popular dish for those who frequent Colette’s Diner in Glace Bay. Every Thursday they completely sell out of their Jiggs dinner. Last Thursday they sold 150 Jiggs Dinners by 2:30 in the afternoon. You have to book early.
