I was thinking about all the musicians that this town has offered up to the world in the name of success in the music industry. There’s Allister MacGillivary, Matt Minglewood, and Aselin Debison to name but a few. What is it about this place that inspires so many to aspire to musical greatness? I think the same can be said for any small town across Canada. It can be said that there are many great musicians and entertainers that hail from many a small town. Glace Bay is one among many and should be proud of it’s musical past.
I cannot forget to mention the Savoy Theatre and how much a part of the town’s Musical History that has been hosted here. Everyone from Blue Rodeo to Leonard Cohen have crooned inside the hallowed hall. The Savoy Theatre officially opened its doors in 1976 and through recent remodelling remains to this day where musicians both local and abroad come to play. Before the Savoy Theatre Musicians such as Johnny Cash, rocked the house at the Miner’s Forum and even the St. Ann’s Parish Centre. Local bands now play at the Main Event, a bar located on Union Street (as if you really didn’t know where it was located).
In a time of crisis, let us remember the musicians who have entertained us over the years. Let’s support their social media jams and buy more of their music. Get out to see their shows when this is all over. I have included a Facebook link below to an Aselin Debison jam session below. Hope you enjoy!
