The 1930-40’s were what some call the Golden Age of American Radio. Radio listeners consumed programs from soap operas to vaudeville and everything in between.
Now, in a new age of Radio, the podcast Your 3 Stories created by Aaron Corbett breathes new life into to the format known as the Radio drama reminiscent in feel and intensity to The War of the Worlds.
In one of the latest episodes called The Chadtvian War, the story takes you to an imaginary broadcast of an imaginary war in an imaginary country. The intensity and immediacy of the production however, leaves you guessing is this real? Could this happen?
Try listening to the episode Paranormal Love in a public place and it may have you questioning humans or aliens?
Inspired by his work to create radio plays for the Old Sydney Society, this Savoy alumnus, decided that with this experience under his belt, he could make his own dramas for a podcast namely because podcasting is a very assessable medium.
Corbett chose the number three because of its importance to comedy. “Usually with a joke,” he says, “every joke comes in threes.”
These stories feel real but are comedic in tone with the banter between the characters that makes you feel part of the conversation.
Each story takes three episodes to unfold. So far there are 5 stories in the series since Corbett started in August of 2018 starting with Paranormal Love and ending with The Chadtvian War. That’s only 12 episodes which he admits because of the production value of each episode takes him longer to produce.
Corbett says, that “each story will have a loose, vague theme attached and that each story is independent and connected very loosely by whatever the theme is of that series.”
The stories are connected in theme however, more than he takes credit for as he uses the same story theme in each connected story. So, each connected story has a similar feel and tone. The stories also have a comic book feel to them with characters that seem to be right out of a Marvel or DC Comic world.
The episodes all start off with the narrator introducing and interestingly concluding the story. The deep almost hallow sound of the narrator takes you out of this dimension and into The Twilight Zone which was the feel he was going for as when he says, “I always want people asking what is going to happen here?”
What is going on, you will ask as you listen to these amusing and somewhat freaky stories (depending on where you are listening). These stories are gripping short narratives that take you away from your everyday normalcy of life. They leave you questioning what’s normal anyway?
Your 3 Stories podcast is a throw-back to another time and another place. A different era in media communication when you sat around a Radio with your family and listened to entertainment. A long-ago time when your time was as valuable as ten cents.
